The Marfan Foundation’s Marfan Awareness Month Social Campaign

Marfan Fact 1: 1 in 500 people are affected by Marfan Syndrome worldwide. It affects people equally regardless of race, ethnicity, and gender.

Marfan Fact 2: To get evaluated for Marfan Syndrome and related disorders, you need to have your heart, eyes, and bones examined by doctors who have experience with these conditions.

Marfan Fact 3: People with Marfan Syndrome are 250 times more likely to have an aortic dissection (tear in the artery that takes blood from the heart) than the general population.

Marfan Fact 4: In most cases, Marfan Syndrome is inherited from a parent. However, in about 25% of cases, the affected person is the first one in the family to have the condition.

Marfan Fact 5: People with Marfan Syndrome are frequently disproportionately tall, with long arms and legs, and an arm span greater than their height.

Marfan Fact 6: Marfan Syndrome is a collection of physical characteristics. The features may vary, and may range from mild to severe, even among affected people in the same family.

Marfan Fact 7: Marfan Syndrome can be hard to diagnose because many of the signs and symptoms also occur in the general population. When they occur together, they could add up to the Marfan diagnosis.

Marfan Fact 8: Many people believe that Abraham Lincoln may have had Marfan Syndrome because he had many of the outward signs.

Marfan Fact 9: A dislocated lens in the eye is a hallmark feature of Marfan Syndrome. A special test called a slit-lamp eye exam is needed for an eye doctor to detect it.
